It's National Pi Day!

Today is pi day... No, not the food which is usually covered in gravy, or custard if it is a fruit pie... Cough cough, the photo on the left. Pi - 𝜋, is a mathematical constant. Basically, pi is the ratio between the circle's circumference (Length of the edge) and the circle's diameter (The length across the middle). It's used in all sorts of mathematical and physics equations. But, most people have likely used it in maths when they are working out the circumference of a circle with the formula;

2𝜋R

Or the area of a circle, with the formula;

𝜋

But today is a celebration of the mathematic constant. This day was started by the organiser Larry Shaw, a physicist who worked at the San Francisco Exploration. The staff, as well as the public, matched around one of the circular areas of their organisation and then went to eat pies.
On the 12th of March 2009, National Pi day was recognised by the US House of Representatives. From then on, there have been more exciting ways to celebrate Pi day. Some have thrown pies, eaten a tremendous amount of pies and some have puns about the word Pi being similar to the other - Pie. This is as well as the joke that pies are circular.

Google even made one of their doddles (Seen below). The word 'Google' is designed around images of shapes and calculations which includes Pi in them.

March is also the Month of pie for some people - this is due to the America way of writing the date, 3/14. It is the first three numbers of pi. Pi to 15th number is 3.14159265358979.
